Poetry Without Borders
A partial introduction to Poetry Without Borders April 17, 2008
“This theme for National Poetry Month, 2008… jumped up, ambushed my imagination, and cracked open my thoughts on how poems can travel the world… I could feel my own Berlin Wall crumble and a fire was lit…and four poems were written, illustrated, and presented to four recipients… I looked to Médecins Sans Frontières, Doctors without Borders for a history and tradition for this concept…the two themes that repeated seemed to be: delivering humanitarian care to alleviate suffering in ravaged countries and more recently, building community. How can Poetry Without Borders to this? Poets from all over Canada and the USA engaged this question in April… See poets.ca or youngpoets.ca. I wrote and gave four poems to people and places in the world building communities, addressing suffering in some way.”
